What makes a strong company name?
Indian company naming is one of the most layered naming challenges in the world. The name must satisfy MCA regulatory requirements, work across multiple regional languages, carry a mandatory legal suffix, and - for most growth-oriented businesses - remain accessible to international investors and global markets.
Every Indian company name must carry a legal suffix. Private Limited companies must end with “Private Limited” or “Pvt. Ltd.” LLPs must include “LLP”. One Person Companies use “OPC Private Limited”. These suffixes are mandatory under the Companies Act and the LLP Act - they appear on all legal documents, contracts, and registrations. Your root name must work naturally with the suffix appended. “Krata Private Limited” works. “NextGen AI Automation Solutions Private Limited” does not - it is unworkable in everyday use.
The most successful Indian companies - Zepto, Razorpay, Groww, Meesho - chose short root names (one or two syllables) that are globally pronounceable and carry no unintended meaning in any major Indian language. This is not coincidence. Abstract and invented names travel far better than descriptive ones across a country with 22 official languages and dozens of regional language markets.
Think about scalability from day one. A name like “Mumbai Fintech Pvt. Ltd.” creates real problems when you expand to Delhi, Bengaluru, or Singapore. Category-specific names like “InvoiceAutomate Pvt. Ltd.” feel constraining within 18 months as the product scope grows. Name the company for where it is going, not only what it does today.
How to use the company name generator
Looking for something more specific? The company name creator might be a better fit, or if “company” skews too formal, try the business name generator. If you’re naming the brand rather than the legal entity, the brand name generator is built for that.
NameCraftr is a free, AI-powered company name generator that checks .com, .in, and .co.in availability in real time for each result, or run any shortlisted name through the standalone domain name checker to confirm. Names available across all three give you strong brand protection for both Indian and international markets.
Give the generator a specific brief. “B2B SaaS for Indian textile exporters to manage compliance documentation and customs filings” will produce suggestions that are more distinctive and more registrable than “export software startup”. The more precisely you describe your market, the better the output.
Once you have candidates, apply this four-step check:
- The cross-language test. Say the name aloud in Hindi, then in one or two other languages your users speak - Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, or Bengali depending on your target market. Ask native speakers whether it sounds natural and whether it carries any unintended meaning. This is the single most India-specific step and the one most founders skip entirely.
- The legal suffix test. Add “Pvt. Ltd.” or “LLP” to each candidate and read it aloud. Does the full legal name still work? Does it look manageable on a contract, letterhead, or GST invoice?
- The domain check. NameCraftr shows .com, .in, and .co.in availability for every suggestion. Prioritise names where all three are clear.
- MCA name availability check. Search at mca.gov.in before doing anything legally. The MCA will reject company names identical or confusingly similar to existing registered companies. This check is free and takes under five minutes.
After the generator: registering your company name
The MCA name approval process has two distinct stages, and founders regularly underestimate the gap between them.
Stage 1 - Name reservation. File the RUN (Reserve Unique Name) form or SPICe+ Part A with the MCA. The RUN fee is Rs. 1,000 and holds the name for 20 days. SPICe+ Part A is the first section of the full incorporation form and can be filed before the remaining details are ready. Name reservation is a temporary lock - it does not guarantee final approval.
Stage 2 - Final approval at incorporation. Even after a name is reserved, the Registrar of Companies reviews it again at the full incorporation stage. Names can be rejected at this stage if the Registrar finds the name to be identical or deceptively similar to an existing company, if it includes a restricted word (such as a reference to the government or a foreign country), or if it violates any other provision of the Companies Act. Reservation does not mean approval.
Register .in and .co.in first through a NIXI-authorised registrar. These are your primary domains for the Indian market. .co.in requires an Indian address for registration. Registering both prevents brand confusion and signals local presence to Indian customers and search engines.
Register .com as well if available. This is essential for international investor pitches, global hiring, and any expansion outside India.
Apply for a trademark at IP India at ipindia.gov.in. DPIIT-recognised startups receive a 50% concession on government filing fees - apply for DPIIT Startup India recognition before filing the trademark to capture this saving. Class 35 covers business services and retail platforms; Class 42 covers software and AI services. Rights date from the application date, not approval, so file as early as possible.
Common company naming mistakes
Not checking MCA before investing in branding. The MCA search at mca.gov.in takes less than five minutes and is completely free. Do it before you brief a designer, build a website, register a domain, or print anything. A conflicting registration at the MCA means starting the entire naming process over.
Skipping the cross-language pronunciation test. This is the most common India-specific error. A name that works perfectly in English and Hindi can carry an unfortunate meaning in Tamil, Marathi, or Bengali - creating real friction in hiring, partnerships, and customer acquisition in those markets. Always test with native speakers.
Treating name reservation as final approval. The RUN form reserves a name for 20 days. It is not a guarantee that the Registrar of Companies will accept the name at the full incorporation stage. Do not commission expensive branding work between reservation and final incorporation - wait until the company is formally registered and the Certificate of Incorporation is issued.
Registering only .com and ignoring .in and .co.in. Indian customers and local search engines favour .in and .co.in for India-focused products. If a competitor or squatter registers your name on .co.in after you have launched on .com only, you face a trust and confusion problem that is expensive and time-consuming to resolve.
Building the brand around a current product feature. The Indian startup ecosystem moves fast. A name like “VoiceFormAI” or “AutoGST” will feel limiting within two years as your product expands beyond its original scope. Name the company for the long-term vision, not the feature you are launching with today.
