Which domain extension should an Indian business use?
India has three domain options worth considering, and the right choice depends on who you are trying to reach.
.co.in is the most established Indian business domain. It signals local presence clearly to Indian customers and search engines, and is the default choice for businesses that primarily serve the Indian market. To register .co.in, your domain must correspond closely to your registered business or company name, and you need an Indian address.
.in is more flexible - there is no business name matching requirement, and it is available to individuals and businesses alike. It works well for personal brands, early-stage startups that have not yet formalised their structure, and businesses whose trading name differs from their registered name.
.com remains essential for any Indian business planning to raise investment from international VCs, hire globally, or expand outside India. Global audiences, international media, and non-Indian investors default to .com when searching for or recalling a business. The best strategy for most Indian AI businesses is to secure all three and redirect .co.in and .in to whichever you use as your primary.
NameCraftr checks .com, .in, and .co.in availability in real time for every suggestion so you can see your options across all three extensions at once.
Haven’t settled on a business name yet? Start with the business name generator first, then come back here to turn the name into a domain. If you don’t need the AI-specific angle, the standard domain name generator covers the same availability workflow for any Indian brand. It’s also a free domain name generator, so there’s no reason not to run it a few times before you commit.
How to find the right domain name with the generator
This AI name generator works best when you are specific about your business context. “AI tool for Indian logistics companies tracking last-mile delivery” will produce more relevant and available domains than “AI logistics tool”. The more specific your brief, the more likely the suggestions will be both distinctive and registrable.
When evaluating suggestions:
- Pronounce it in Hindi and one other regional language. A domain that gets misspelled when customers try to type it from memory creates support problems and lost traffic. Test this before registering.
- Check all three extensions. As an AI domain name generator and checker, NameCraftr shows .com, .in, and .co.in availability together. If your preferred name is available across all three, register them immediately - domain squatting on Indian ccTLDs is common once a brand gains visibility.
- Check MCA records. If you plan to incorporate under this name, search mca.gov.in to confirm the name is available as a company name too. Aligning your domain and company name from the start avoids rebranding costs later.
- Keep it short. Indian domain names are typed more often on mobile than on desktop. Under 12 characters is the practical target. Every additional character increases the chance of a typo.
After the generator: registering your Indian domain
Once you have a domain name you want:
- Register .in and .co.in immediately through a NIXI-authorised registrar (BigRock, GoDaddy India, Namecheap, Hostinger India all support Indian ccTLDs). For .co.in you will need to provide your Indian address and a business name that closely matches the domain.
- Register .com at the same time if available. Even if you launch on .co.in, owning .com prevents a competitor or squatter from creating confusion.
- Set up domain privacy protection (WHOIS privacy) on .com. Indian ccTLDs (.in, .co.in) managed through NIXI do not support WHOIS privacy in the same way, so your registrant details may be publicly visible for those.
- Point all three domains to the same website - either redirect .in and .co.in to .com, or vice versa. Running separate websites on each extension fragments your SEO and confuses customers.
For DPIIT-recognised startups, some registrars offer discounted first-year pricing on .in and .co.in. Check with your registrar before purchasing.
Common Indian domain naming mistakes
Registering only .com and skipping Indian ccTLDs. This is the most common mistake for Indian startups with global ambitions. Once your brand gains visibility, squatters register .co.in and .in, then either hold them for ransom or create confusion by redirecting them to competitors. Register all three from day one.
Choosing a domain that does not match your planned company name. If you plan to incorporate as a Private Limited company or LLP, the MCA will register your company name based on what you file. If your domain and company name diverge significantly, you create ongoing confusion for customers, vendors, and regulators. Align them from the start.
Using hyphens to get around unavailability. If “razorpay.in” were taken and you registered “razor-pay.in”, customers who hear the name verbally would go to the unhyphenated version. Hyphens also look less credible in email addresses and on business cards. If your preferred name is unavailable, generate a new name rather than hyphenating.
Registering a domain before checking .co.in eligibility. The .co.in registration requirement - that the domain must closely match your registered business name - catches many founders off guard. If you have already branded around a domain and then discover it does not match your registered business name closely enough, you either need to change the domain or re-register your business name. Check eligibility before launching.
Treating domain registration as a one-time task. Domains expire. Set auto-renewal on every domain you register, especially .com - losing a domain to expiry is an entirely avoidable crisis that disrupts email, website access, and brand trust simultaneously.
